Waimate 50 Horsepower Hillclimb October 2022

Horsepower Hill Climb to make its mark in iconic NZ Hill Climb events.

The team at Waimate 50 are back again for their yearly dose of kiwi motorsport action - bringing their taste of street racing back to the hills this time around in 2022.

Kicking off the weekend’s activities will be the exciting Model Garage ‘Point Bush Hillclimb’ a 1.5km tarmac hillclimb right in the edge of town climbing its way up past many houses along Point Bush Road to amazing views at the top of the course.  It’s a challenge for the drivers with added course elements along with the natural contours that combine on this very fast and flowing hillclimb.

A fantastic addition is it is a free event for the public, with many great spectator viewing points and walking access to capture all the action, starting earlier this time at around 1.00pm through to 7.00pm with entertainment you do not want to miss.

“Although this is a big move away from our proven street formula we are upbeat and pumped that our two newly developed hillclimbs with enhanced spectator viewing and supporting facilities will create an atmosphere not seen here before.” - Rob Aikman, Waimate 50 event organizer.

New Zealand Rally Champion Hayden Paddon will be back on show - bringing his incredible Hyundai Kona EV after taking out a dominating victory in WRC2 during the recent Repco Rally New Zealand.

“I'm Really looking forward to competing at Horsepower Hill. After doing some demo runs there a couple of years ago, it’s a magic piece of road with a bit of everything. It’s an iconic road and an iconic event, something myself and the team are proud to be part of” - Hayden Paddon

The main feature - Saturday and Sunday feature the new Mount Shop ‘Horsepower Hill’ - a thrilling 4.0km genuine gravel hill climb with an elevation over 250 meters, the tight and technical stages open up with fast and skipping crests and a finish up at the iconic White Horse Monument, The race to the Whitehorse is not for the faint hearted.

At the top there are the amazing panoramic views of the township and surrounding Canterbury plains.

The course will also feature two main spectator areas that are supported with live commentary, food services and other support services, it will come down to 50 drivers who have been selected to take on Horsepower Hill and see who really is the fastest.
