Shane Van Gisbergen Drifting in New Zealand

This week's Thursday Throwback ⏳ to Shane van Gisbergen drifting in New Zealand 🔥

With his recent success competing in NASCAR, the kiwi racing superstar seems to have shocked fans around the world with his skill-set behind the wheel - while known for his championship winning laps in Supercars, little known to his international fanbase is his ability behind the wheel in competitive pro drifting.

Shane was last seen in the D1NZ New Zealand Drifting Championship back in 2018, driving for the Australian-based MCA Suspension team, running a VK56 powered Nissan 370z.

Its rare to see someone drive at this calibre; the ability to cross-code from circuit racing into competitive drifting is hard for most, but for Shane it was a natural talent right off the bat 👌

For reference, two-time kiwi champion Cole Armstrong Drift is chasing him down in this video with the V Energy R34 Skyline, both of them shredding the Timaru Raceway layout.

Shane first drove in the D1NZ series back in the 2013/14 season thanks to Rattla Motorsport, piloting their Ford Falcon to his first ever drifting podiums at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park and Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch.

In his first full debut season (2014) SVG was knocking out seasoned veterans and former champions, with a 3rd place finish at Round 1 that year, and another 2nd place podium behind drifting legend Gaz Whiter at Round 5 that year.

The Rattla Motorsport 2000 Ford Falcon BA - an ex NZV8 touring car, was powered by a 468ci Ford V8; double stinted with both Shane Allen and Van-Gisbergen driving the car.

D1NZ Champion Curt Whittaker was also driving for the Rattla Motorsport team that year, sharing his knowledge and experience with the two rising stars while competing in the Autosure backed R34 Nissan Skyline.

SVG would eventually finish 8th overall for his first ever season, before bringing his new drifting skill-set to victory laps in the Australian Supercars series.

SVG’s first ever competitive event was at Manfeild Circuit Chris Amon, which was the opening round of the 2012/13 Season.
