Gaz Whiter’s Insane Crash at Baypark (2013)

Today’s pick for Thursday Throwbacks is this absolutely mental crash at D1NZ Baypark in 2013 - New Zealand drift legend Gaz Whiter was behind the wheel of his LS-Swapped S14 Silvia - Backed by Tectaloy Performance Coolants.

Gaz was battling another ‘old boy’ from the early days of D1 - Shaun Falconer in the black S13, maybe pushing a little too hard in the chase; tagging the concrete wall on the first outside scoring zone. This would set him off-line and destined for a whole lot of no good with a head on impact lined up with the concrete walls at turn 2 - a split second decision saw Gaz commit the car through a super fast re-initiation, holding the foot flat to the floor hoping to keep the rear end of the car off the wall…

In the end it was a massive stack for the Tectaloy S14 in-front of a packed house at Baypark, with Gaz able to walk away from the incident with minor injuries.

This was one of the most significant crashes in D1NZ history at the time, particularly in the context of how the cars were rapidly developing with weight reduction, semi slick tyres and concern over fuel that would directly lead to a raft of safety regs and protocol changes for the series.
